If you're trading on Hyperliquid (HL) and you want the 4% referral fee discount, this guide walks through how it actually works โ verified against my own live account screenshots, not just documentation.
TL;DR
- HL Tier 0 base perp fees (no volume, no staking) as of 2026-04: 0.045% taker / 0.015% maker. Source: hyperliquid.gitbook.io/hyperliquid-docs/trading/fees (verified 2026-04-28)
- With a 4% referral discount applied (any code, including my own): 0.0432% taker / 0.0144% maker.
- Verified math:
0.0450% ร (1 - 0.04) = 0.0432%โ - The discount is automatic once you sign up via any referral link. It compounds with HYPE staking discounts (separate stack).
- Cap: first $25M of trading volume per account.
What you actually see in your HL portfolio
When I opened my HL Portfolio dashboard (Trade page โ Portfolio), the Fees (Taker / Maker) card showed:
> 0.0432% / 0.0144%
Not the 0.045% / 0.015% the public fee schedule lists. The lower number is what I'm actually being charged.
To verify this isn't from staking, I checked the Fee Schedule modal (click "View Fee Schedule"):
- Staking Discount / HYPE Staked: 0% / 0.00000000 HYPE
> "A referral discount of 4.00% is also applied to fees."
The math checks out exactly:
Tier 0 perp taker base = 0.0450%
ร (1 - 0.04 referral) = 0.0432% (matches what dashboard shows)
ร (1 - 0.04 referral) = 0.0144% (matches my actual maker fee)
Tier 0 perp maker base = 0.0150%
How HL's fee discount stack works
HL has two independent fee discount mechanics:
1. Referral discount: 4.00% off all fees, applied automatically when you sign up via any referral link. Cap: first $25M of account volume.
2. HYPE staking discount: 5%, 10%, 20%, or 40% off fees depending on amount of HYPE you stake. No volume cap, but you have to actually buy and stake HYPE.The two stack multiplicatively, not additively, per the HL fee schedule note: *"Aligned quote assets have 20% lower base fees, 50% better maker rebates, and 25% higher volume contribution. Spot pairs between two quote assets have 80% lower base fees and major maker rebates. Spot and quote volume are counted together to determine your fee tier, and split volume counts double toward your tier. Scaled fees above also apply volume contributions."*
So if you have both:

The volume tier ladder (separate from the 4% discount)
HL also discounts fees as your 14-day trading volume rises. Tier 0 is what most retail users will sit in indefinitely:
| Tier | 14D Volume | Perp Taker | Perp Maker | Spot Taker | Spot Maker |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | < $5,000,000 | 0.0450% | 0.0150% | 0.0700% | 0.0400% |
| 1 | โฅ $5M | 0.0400% | 0.0120% | 0.0600% | 0.0300% |
| 2 | โฅ $25M | 0.0350% | 0.0080% | 0.0500% | 0.0200% |
| 3 | โฅ $100M | 0.0300% | 0.0040% | 0.0400% | 0.0200% |
| 4 | โฅ $500M | 0.0280% | 0.0000% | 0.0300% | 0.0200% |
| 5 | โฅ $2B | 0.0260% | 0.0000% | 0.0300% | 0.0250% |
| 6 | โฅ $7B | 0.0250% | 0.0000% | 0.0250% | 0.0250% |
For most retail traders, you will spend your entire HL career in Tier 0. The 4% referral discount is the only fee adjustment that's actually within your control.
What the discount is worth in dollars
Realistic monthly volume vs annual fee savings, compared against a no-referral Tier 0 account:
| Monthly perp volume | Without discount (taker side) | With 4% discount | Annual savings |
|---|---|---|---|
| $1,000 | $0.45 | $0.432 | $0.22 |
| $10,000 | $4.50 | $4.32 | $2.16 |
| $100,000 | $45.00 | $43.20 | $21.60 |
| $1,000,000 | $450.00 | $432.00 | $216.00 |
| $5,000,000 | $2,250.00 | $2,160.00 | $1,080.00 |
For a typical retail trader at low five-figure monthly volume, the saving is small in absolute dollars but it's pure free money. The signup-with-referral cost is zero.
How to verify your own discount is active
If you're not sure whether your HL account has the 4% discount applied:
1. Open app.hyperliquid.xyz and connect your wallet.
2. Go to Portfolio (top right). 3. Look for the Fees (Taker / Maker) card on the left side. 4. If you see 0.0432% / 0.0144% with 0 HYPE staked, you have the 4% referral discount. โ 5. If you see the unmodified base 0.045% / 0.015% with 0 HYPE staked, you don't have the discount. The 4% is unrecoverable on this account. To get the discount on a *new* account: sign up with a referral link from the start. You can use mine or any other valid HL referral.
Common misconceptions
- "The discount expires in N days" โ false. It applies until your account hits $25M of volume.
- "It only applies to taker fees" โ false. Both maker and taker, both perp and spot.
- "You earn HYPE rewards from the discount" โ false. The discount is a fee reduction, not a token reward. HYPE rewards come from a separate staking program.
- "Referrer gets paid out of your discount" โ partially true. The referrer earns ~10% of your fees as rebate (paid by HL, not deducted from your account). The 4% discount you receive is HL absorbing the cost; your trades cost you less, your friend earns separately.
What happens after $25M volume
The 4% referral discount caps at $25M lifetime per account. After that, your fees return to the base tier rate (which by then is probably Tier 1 or Tier 2 anyway, since you'd have very high 14D volume to hit $25M lifetime).
For a retail trader at $10K/month volume, hitting $25M takes ~208 years. The cap is essentially infinite for retail use.
Bottom line
If you're opening a new HL account and you don't already have a referrer arranged, use my link. It costs you nothing, it saves you 4% on every trade for the practical lifetime of your account, and it's verifiable in your portfolio dashboard within 30 seconds of placing your first trade.
If you've already opened an HL account without a referrer, that account's discount is gone. The only path is a new wallet + new account on next funding cycle.
