I went through the full process and documented everything. Some steps are non-obvious (like market data subscriptions — you WILL want those), and the cheapest funding methods aren't always the default ones.
Important: If you signed up through a referral link, both you and I receive IBKR stock rewards after you fund your account. The stock rewards vest over time, so you need to maintain your account — don't just fund it and withdraw immediately.Haven't applied yet? Use this referral link to get the stock bonus, then follow this guide.

Step 1: Complete Your Application
IBKR's application is more detailed than most platforms because they're regulated as a broker-dealer globally. Here's what you'll go through:
Choose Your Account Type
- Individual Account: Standard personal account. This is what most people need.
- Joint Account: Shared with a spouse or partner. Both parties need to provide documentation.
- IRA / Retirement: For US tax-advantaged retirement accounts.
- Trust / Corporate: For business or trust structures.
Choose Your Account Plan
- IBKR Pro: Lower commissions, access to all features, but has activity fees if you don't trade enough (waived if account > $100K or you generate > $10/month in commissions)
- IBKR Lite: Zero commission on US stocks, but slightly worse execution (they sell order flow). Only available to US residents.
Fill in Your Financial Profile
IBKR asks about:
- Annual income
- Net worth
- Investment experience (stocks, options, futures, etc.)
- Investment objectives
- Source of funds
Trading Permissions
During application, select the products and markets you want access to:
- Stocks — Always yes
- Options — Yes if you plan to trade options (you can add later)
- Futures — Yes for futures trading
- Forex — Yes for currency trading
- Fractional Shares — Enable this! It's off by default and lets you buy $10 of any stock. I wrote about how to enable fractional shares if you miss it during setup.
---
Step 2: Identity Verification
After submitting your application:
1. Upload a government-issued photo ID (passport recommended)
2. Upload proof of address (utility bill or bank statement dated within 3 months) 3. Some countries require additional documents — IBKR will tell you exactly what's needed Timeline: Verification typically takes 1-3 business days. I've seen it go as fast as same-day and as slow as a week for certain countries. You'll receive an email when approved. Don't stress if it takes a few days — IBKR is thorough because they're a serious, publicly-traded brokerage.
---
Step 3: Fund Your Account (The Cheapest Way)
Once approved, it's time to deposit. This is where the referral bonus kicks in — both you and I receive IBKR stock rewards after your account is funded.
Minimum Deposit
There is no minimum deposit for most IBKR accounts (they removed the $10K minimum years ago). You can start with any amount, though I'd recommend at least $100-500 to have meaningful trading capital.
Cheapest Funding Methods
1. Bank Wire Transfer (Recommended for large amounts)- Go to Transfer & Pay → Transfer Funds → Deposit
- Select Wire Transfer
- IBKR provides their bank details — your bank sends the wire
- Cost: Depends on your bank (often $0-25 for domestic wire)
- Time: 1-3 business days
- Best for: Deposits over $1,000
- Link your US bank account
- Transfer funds electronically
- Cost: Free
- Time: 2-4 business days
- Best for: US-based users
- For European bank accounts
- Cost: Usually free or very low
- Time: 1-2 business days
- If you're depositing in a different currency than your account base, use Wise or Revolut to convert first, then wire in the target currency
- This avoids IBKR's forex conversion spread
- I've saved hundreds of dollars doing this for SGD → USD conversions
Avoid These Deposit Mistakes
- Don't use a credit card — IBKR doesn't accept them anyway, but some people try through intermediaries. Don't.
- Don't deposit tiny amounts repeatedly — Each wire may cost your bank a fee. Do fewer, larger deposits.
- Match the name exactly — The bank account must be in the same name as your IBKR account. No exceptions.
Step 4: Subscribe to Market Data
This is the step most new IBKR users miss, and then they wonder why they see delayed quotes.
By default, IBKR gives you 15-minute delayed data. You need to subscribe to real-time data.1. Go to Account Settings → Market Data Subscriptions (or search "market data" in the Client Portal)
2. Subscribe to the exchanges you need:| Subscription | Cost/Month | What You Get |
|---|---|---|
| US Securities Snapshot & Futures Value Bundle | $10 | Real-time US stocks & futures |
| NASDAQ TotalView (Level 2) | $15 | Full order book depth |
| OPRA (US Options) | $1.50 | Real-time options quotes |
| Non-Professional for most | Cheaper | If you're not a professional trader |

Step 5: Choose Your Trading Platform
IBKR offers multiple platforms:
IBKR Desktop (Recommended for Beginners)
- Modern, clean interface
- Easy to navigate
- AI-powered stock screener with natural language search — I covered this in my IBKR AI Screener guide
- Download from the Client Portal or go to ibkr.com
Trader Workstation (TWS) (For Power Users)
- The original IBKR platform
- More complex but infinitely customizable
- Required for API trading, advanced order types, and some features not in IBKR Desktop
- Check my IBKR Desktop vs TWS comparison to decide which is right for you
IBKR Mobile
- Available on iOS and Android
- Great for monitoring and quick trades on the go
- Not ideal for complex order management
Web Portal (Client Portal)
- Basic trading in your browser
- Good for account management, transfers, and simple trades
- No installation needed

Step 6: Make Your First Trade
Let's place a simple stock trade:
On IBKR Desktop:
1. Search for a stock symbol in the top search bar (e.g., AAPL for Apple)
2. Click on the stock to open its detail page 3. Click Trade (or the Buy/Sell buttons) 4. Fill in the order: - Action: Buy - Quantity: Number of shares (or dollar amount if fractional shares enabled) - Order Type: Limit recommended (you set the max price you'll pay) - Price: Set your limit price slightly above current ask for a quick fill - Time in Force: Day (expires end of trading day) or GTC (good till cancel) 5. Review the order summary — check the estimated commission 6. Click Submit First trade commission: For US stocks, expect about $0.35-1.00 for a small order. IBKR has some of the lowest commissions in the industry. Fractional shares tip: Don't have enough for a full share of a $200 stock? Enable fractional shares and buy $10 worth. Perfect for getting started with small capital. See my fractional shares guide if the option isn't showing up.---
Step 7: Set Up Price Alerts
IBKR's alert system is powerful and free:
1. Right-click any stock → Create Alert
2. Set conditions: - Price crosses above/below a level - Volume spikes - Percentage change - Margin cushion low 3. Choose notification method: app push notification, email, or SMS 4. Alerts persist across sessions — they run on IBKR's servers, not your local machineI set price alerts for every position I hold. No need to stare at screens all day.
---
Step 8: Understand the Fee Structure
IBKR's fees are low but have nuances:
- US Stocks: $0.005/share, $1 minimum ($0.0035/share at higher volumes)
- US Options: $0.65/contract
- Forex: 0.2 basis points (0.002%), $2 minimum
- No custody fees, no inactivity fees (they removed inactivity fees in 2021)
- Interest on cash: IBKR pays you interest on uninvested cash above $10K (currently competitive rates)
---
Step 9: Use Tax and Portfolio Tools
IBKR has built-in tools that many people overlook:
PortfolioAnalyst
- Free portfolio tracking across ALL your accounts (even external ones)
- Performance reporting, benchmarking, sector exposure
- Tax reports — I wrote about the Tax Planner tool specifically
Tax Optimization
- Tax-lot selection methods (FIFO, LIFO, specific lot)
- Tax-loss harvesting support
- Comprehensive year-end tax documents
---
About the Referral Stock Reward
If you signed up through the referral link, here's how the stock reward works:
- After funding your account, both you and I receive shares of IBKR stock
- The reward amount depends on your initial deposit and activity
- The shares vest over one year — they're released in portions each month
- You need to maintain your account during the vesting period
- If you close your account early, unvested shares are forfeited
---
Common Issues After Setup
"Delayed quotes" everywhere: You haven't subscribed to market data. Go to Account Settings → Market Data Subscriptions. Can't trade options/futures: Your trading permissions may not include them. Go to Account Settings → Trading Permissions and request access. Wire transfer not arriving: Bank wires can take 1-3 business days. Make sure you used the correct IBKR bank details and that the name on your bank account matches exactly. "Fractional shares not available": This needs to be enabled in trading permissions. Read my step-by-step fix.---

*Affiliate Disclosure: This article contains referral links. If you open an account through these links and fund it, both you and I receive IBKR stock as a referral reward. This costs you nothing — IBKR funds the reward program. The shares vest over 12 months, requiring you to maintain an active, funded account. I only recommend brokerages I personally use for my own trading. All opinions are my own.*
