Hyperliquid Account Setup After Signup: Complete Guide to Your First Perps Trade (2026)

⚠️ Disclosure: Some links on this page are affiliate links. If you sign up through them, I may earn a commission — at no extra cost to you. I only review tools I actually use.
You've connected your wallet to Hyperliquid through a referral link — good. Now you're looking at a trading interface and wondering what's next.

I went through this exact process, and the biggest question was: how do I actually get money onto Hyperliquid to start trading? It's not like a centralized exchange where you just deposit. There's a bridging step that trips up a lot of people.

Here's exactly what I did, step by step.

Important: Your referral bonus only activates if you connected your wallet through the referral link AND complete your first trade. If you connected without a referral link, you'll need to disconnect and reconnect through the link before making any trades.

Haven't connected yet? Use this referral link first, then follow the steps below.

---

Step 1: Set Up Your Wallet (If You Haven't Already)

Hyperliquid is a decentralized perpetual futures exchange. There's no username/password — your wallet IS your account.

Recommended Wallets

MetaMask (Most popular) Rabby Wallet (My preference) Either wallet works perfectly with Hyperliquid. I use Rabby because it warns me about sketchy transactions before I sign them.

---

Step 2: Connect Your Wallet to Hyperliquid

This is where the referral link matters.

1. Go to https://app.hyperliquid.xyz/join/RICH888

2. Click Connect in the top right 3. Select your wallet (MetaMask or Rabby) 4. Approve the connection in your wallet popup 5. You'll be asked to sign a message — this doesn't cost any gas, it just proves you own the wallet Critical: Make sure you use the referral link for this step. If you go directly to app.hyperliquid.xyz without the referral code, you won't get the fee discount.

---

Step 3: Bridge USDC to Hyperliquid L1 (The Cheapest Way)

Hyperliquid runs on its own L1 chain. You need to bridge USDC to it before you can trade. Here's where most people overpay.

The Cheapest Route: Arbitrum → Hyperliquid

1. Get USDC on Arbitrum

- If you have USDC on Ethereum mainnet, bridge it to Arbitrum first using the Arbitrum Bridge — this saves you gas on the Hyperliquid bridge step - If you're buying fresh, buy USDC on an exchange and withdraw to your wallet on the Arbitrum network. Most exchanges charge $0.5-1 for Arbitrum withdrawals. - Make sure it's USDC (native), not USDC.e (bridged). Hyperliquid accepts both but native USDC is cleaner.

2. Bridge to Hyperliquid

- Go to app.hyperliquid.xyz/trade - Click Deposit on the bottom left - Enter the amount of USDC to bridge - Approve the USDC spend in your wallet (first time only) - Confirm the bridge transaction - Cost: Usually $0.10-0.50 in Arbitrum gas. That's it. - Time: 1-5 minutes for the funds to appear on Hyperliquid

Why Arbitrum Is Cheapest

RouteEstimated CostTime
Arbitrum → Hyperliquid$0.10-0.501-5 min
Ethereum → Hyperliquid$5-20+5-15 min

Arbitrum wins every time. The gas on Arbitrum is pennies compared to Ethereum mainnet. Pro tip: Bridge more than you plan to trade immediately. Each bridge transaction costs gas, so doing it once with a larger amount is cheaper than multiple small bridges.

Step 4: Place Your First Trade

Now the fun part. Your USDC is on Hyperliquid, and the referral bonus activates after your first trade.

1. Go to the Trade tab

2. Select a trading pair — BTC-PERP or ETH-PERP are the most liquid 3. On the order panel (right side): - Select Cross margin mode (uses your entire balance as collateral) or Isolated (only uses what you allocate to this position) - Set your leverage — start low, like 3x or 5x. Don't jump to 50x on your first trade. - Choose Market order for immediate execution, or Limit order to set your price 4. Enter your position size 5. Click Buy / Long or Sell / Short 6. Confirm in your wallet

That's your first trade. Referral bonus: activated.

For more on fees and how to minimize them, read my guide on Hyperliquid maker vs taker fees. Short version: use limit orders to pay maker fees (0.01%) instead of taker fees (0.035%).

---

Step 5: Understand Margin Modes and Leverage

Before you trade seriously, understand how margin works on Hyperliquid.

Cross Margin vs Isolated Margin

I covered this in depth in my Cross vs Isolated Margin guide.

Leverage Settings

Portfolio Margin (Advanced)

If you qualify, Portfolio Margin mode lets hedged positions offset each other, freeing up more capital. This is for experienced traders only.

---

Step 6: Explore Vaults and HYPE Staking

Hyperliquid isn't just a trading platform. There's a growing ecosystem.

HLP Vault (Hyperliquid Liquidity Provider)

The HLP vault is Hyperliquid's main market-making vault:

1. Go to Vaults tab

2. Select HLP 3. Deposit USDC 4. You earn a share of trading fees and market-making profits 5. Risk: The vault can lose money in volatile markets. It's not a savings account.

Historical APY has been attractive, but past performance doesn't guarantee future returns. Start small.

HYPE Token Staking

If you hold HYPE tokens:

1. Go to the Staking section

2. Stake your HYPE to secure the network and earn rewards 3. Staked HYPE also gives you a fee discount on trading

I wrote about the economics of this in my HYPE staking and fee discount guide. The fee discount alone can pay for itself if you trade actively.

---

Step 7: Set Up Trading Tools

TradingView Integration

Hyperliquid's built-in charts are powered by TradingView. But if you want more advanced charting:

Position Monitoring

---

Step 8: Security Best Practices for DeFi Trading

Trading on a DEX is different from centralized exchanges. You're responsible for your own security.

---

Common Issues After Setup

"Insufficient balance" but you just bridged: Bridging takes 1-5 minutes. Wait and refresh. If it's been over 10 minutes, check the transaction on Arbiscan. Wallet won't connect: Try clearing your browser cache, or switch between MetaMask and Rabby. Some browser extensions conflict with each other. High slippage on trades: You're trading a low-liquidity pair. Stick to BTC-PERP and ETH-PERP for the tightest spreads. Bridge transaction stuck: Arbitrum sometimes has delays during high-traffic periods. Be patient — I've never had a bridge transaction fail, just delayed.

---

Recap: Your Hyperliquid Setup Checklist

1. ✅ Set up MetaMask or Rabby wallet

2. ✅ Connect wallet via referral link 3. ✅ Get USDC on Arbitrum (cheapest route) 4. ✅ Bridge USDC to Hyperliquid (~$0.10-0.50) 5. ✅ Place your first trade → referral bonus activated 6. ✅ Configure margin mode and leverage 7. ✅ Explore HLP vault and HYPE staking

The entire process from wallet setup to first trade took me about 15 minutes, assuming you already have USDC. The bridge is the only part that might take a couple of minutes to confirm.
